About The Fund
The John R. Dexter Music Fund was created in 2025 to celebrate and carry on the legacy and spirit of John R. Dexter – renowned violist, beloved coach and teacher, and member of the Manhattan String Quartet for more than 40 years.
John passed away in 2023 leaving behind countless students and colleagues who recognized his special gift for sharing his love of music. His inspiration touched the lives of hundreds of musicians, and he shared with all his passion for chamber music.
The Mission Statement of the John R Dexter Music Fund is to award scholarships to support deserving chamber music instrumentalists to attend a chamber music conference, educational program, festival, master class, or coaching workshop to enhance their skills. The Fund will award scholarships to chamber musicians of all ages including young professionals and adult amateurs.
A guiding principle of the Fund is that music is a universal need and benefit, and the Fund aspires to facilitate personal artistic growth in all who seek the beauty and transformative power of chamber music.
As scholarships are awarded we will share information about the individuals or groups who have benefited from the Fund’s resources.
